There he must destroy the One Ring forever and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-Lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne,
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in darkness bind them,
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
CHARACTERS:
Frodo Baggins was a Hobbit of the Third Age, the most famous of all Hobbits in the histories for his leading role in the Quest of the Ring. During this epic quest, he bore the One Ring to Mount Doom and there destroyed it, giving him renown like no other Hobbit throughout Middle-earth. He is also peculiar for being, as a Ring-bearer, one of the three Hobbits who sailed from Middle-earth to Aman, there to die in peace. |

"I will take it. I will take the Ring to Mordor...though I do not know the way."
- Frodo, at the Council of Elrond |
|
Samwise Gamgee (TA 2983-Fourth Age 62; SR 1383-1482), also known as Sam, was Frodo Baggins' servant and later best friend who proved to be the most loyal of the Fellowship of the Ring. |
|
"There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for." - Sam |

Meriadoc Brandybuck, usually referred to as Merry, was a Hobbit, and one of Frodo's closest friends. He loved boats and ponies and had a great interest in the maps of Middle-earth. He was also related to Frodo several times over.
Merry was born in TA 2982. He was the only child of Saradoc Brandybuck (TA 2940-FO 11), Master of Buckland, and Esmeralda Took (TA 2936-?), the younger sister of Paladin Took, making him first cousin to their son Pippin, who was clearly his closest friend. |
|
"But I have an odd feeling about these Ents: somehow I don't think they are quite as safe and, well funny as they seem. They seem slow, queer, and patient, almost sad; and yet I believe they could be roused. If that happened, I would rather be on the other side." - Merry |
|
Peregrin Took (TA 2990-FO 65), better known to his friends as Pippin, was a Hobbit, and one of Frodo Baggins's youngest but best friends.
Pippin had three older sisters, Pearl Took, Pimpernel Took, and Pervinca Took. His parents were Paladin Took II (TA 2933 - FO 13), Thain of the Shire, and Eglantine Banks. Pippin's dear friend Meriadoc Brandybuck was the son of Paladin's sister Esmeralda Brandybuck.
The hair on his head and his feet (which are exceptionally hairy, even for a Hobbit) was almost golden and curly. At the beginning of Quest of the Ring he is smaller than the rest of the Hobbits because he is the youngest. |
|
"I don't want to be in a battle, but waiting on the edge of one I can't escape is even worse." - Pippin |
|
Gandalf, also known as Olorin and Mithrandir, was an Istar. Istari were Maiar that were hand-picked by the Valar to help aid the peoples of Middle-earth in the fight against evil. The Istari (Men called them wizards) took the form of Men but possessed much greater physical and mental power.
For over 2000 years, Gandalf the Grey worked against the rising powers of evil in Middle-earth. |
|
"A wizard is never late, nor is he early; he arrives precisely when he means to." - Gandalf |
|
Aragorn II, also known as Elessar was the 16th Chieftain of the Dúnedain of the North; he was later crowned King Elessar Telcontar March 1, TA 2931 - FO 120), the 26th King of Arnor, 34th King of Gondor and First High King of the Reunited Kingdom, was the son of Arathorn II (who was the son of Arador of the Dúnadan), and Gilraen. He was a great warrior, and as the heir of Isildur, bore the shards of Narsil, which before theWar of the Ring was reforged and renamed Anduril, the Flame of the West. |
|
"I am Aragorn son of Arathorn, and am called Elessar, the Elfstone, Dúnadain, the heir of Isildur Elendil's son of Gondor. Here is the Sword that was Broken and is forged again! Will you aid me or thwart me? Choose swiftly!" - Aragorn |
|
Legolas Greenleaf is a Sindarin Elf who became a part of the Fellowship of the Ring. With his keen eyesight, sensitive hearing, and excellent bowmanship, Legolas was a valuable resource to the other eight members of the Fellowship. His age is never stated by Tolkien but is estimated to be between 3,000 to 5,000 years old. |
|
"Legolas Greenleaf long under tree: In joy thou hast lived. Beware of the Sea! If thou hearest the cry of the gull on the shore, thy heart shall then rest in the forest no more." - Galadriel |
|
Gimli, son of Glóin, was a well-respected warf warrior in Middle-earth. He was a member of the Fellowship of the Ring, and was the only dwarf to readily fight alongsideelves in the war against Sauron at the end of the Third Age. After the defeat of Sauron, he was given lordship of the Glittering Caves at Helm's Deep. |
|
Boromir was a valiant warrior known in Gondor for his greatness, having already achieved great merit in Gondor prior to the Council of Elrond. His strength and forceful mood made him a great commander of Gondor who would have protected his people no matter what. Even the people of Rohan, particularly Éomer, admired him. |
